Since the U. S. Immigration Laws of 1965, the Asian population in the Unites States has increased in number (Sodowsky, Kwan & Pannu as cited in Ponterotto, Casas, Suzuki & Alelxander, 1995). According to Sodowksy, while many Asians aspire to western values such as ambition, optimism and ingenuity, most Asian Americans strive to preserve their cultural characteristics and identity. Sodowsky et al. (1995) assert that the ethnicity of Asians in the U. S. is multidimensional, and Asian Americans identify themselves by their physical appearance. For example, ‘Students who have straight black hair, dark, slanted eyes, and “ivory” skin identify themselves as Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, or Taiwanese and of a physically visible and identifiable racial stock. Thus, in an Asian American student association, according to Sodowsky et al., there could be differences among individual in one Asian ethnic group. For instance, a Japanese American student could strongly identify with the Japanese American ethnic cultures. These same students might not identify with the general Asian American race.
