First, a counselor who does not consider cultural factors is unethical for various reasons. He or she does not show evidence or working knowledge of ethical or models of professional ethics when he or she does not include cultural factors. The impact of cultural diversity definitely plays a major role in counseling. If a counselor labels a client as “just another quiet Asian or another angry black male,” he or she is unethical and demonstrating injustice and lack of fidelity as recommended in Corey’s textbook.

Since effective counselors realize their own limitations, cultural differences and biases, they are able to exhibit ethics in an appropriate manner. Failure to demonstrate tolerance leads to racist or stereotypical notions of clients and their needs.
