Leaders and managers differ on several dimensions, although sometimes one person both manages and leads. However, there are subtle differences between managing and leading.

The essence of a leader is about change; for a manager, it is stability. In other words, leaders are more interested in change, whereas a manager is interested in stability. Leaders focus on leading people, whereas managers focus on managing work. Leaders have followers; managers have subordinates. Leaders do not have subordinates – at least not when they are leading. Many organizational leaders do have subordinates, but only because they are also managers. But when they want to lead, they have to give up formal authoritarian control, because to lead is to have followers, and following is always a voluntary activity. Whereas a leader’s horizon is long-term, a manager’s is short-term. Leaders seek visions, whereas the manager seeks objectives. Leaders and managers also have different approaches. Whereas a leader sets strategic direction (vision, values, mission and / or goals), managers plan details. When making decisions, leaders facilitate the decision-making of others, whereas managers make the decisions. Leaders and managers have different power sources.
