The facial feedback hypothesis (FFH) proposes that action of our facial musculature is a causal agent in the subjective sensation of emotions. In others, there is a causal link between facial musculature and emotions (e.g., a smile causes the sensation of happiness OR a frown causes the sensation of sadness). This is supported by others who argue that the free expression or inhibition of the physical characteristics of emotions (i.e. smiling, frowning, etc…) actually feed back into the emotion itself. Like mentioned above, this means that a smile might cause the sensation of happiness and a frown the sensation of sadness, rather than vice versa. It is the facial behaviour (smile, grimace or frown) that causes the sensation of emotion. To test this theory, for the FFH to hold true, the manipulation of facial musculature should inhibit all associated emotionality. However, further study has challenged this causal link between facial musculature and the subjective sensation of emotions, suggesting other factors also influence the sensation of emotion–suggesting that the facial feedback hypothesis only …
