Explain the concept of habituation.
The concept to Habituation indicates a decrease in behavioral responsiveness that occurs when a stimulus is repeated frequently without reward of punishment. Habituation involves becoming accustomed to a stimulus so that you gradually give less attention to the recognition that it is a stimulus. For an ordinary everyday example, if you can become accustomed to studying for an exam while listening to music. At first the music (stimulus) may be distracting. However, after a period of listening, you become habituated, and pay little attention to the music. In their study, Rose & Slater (1983) compared three and five month-old infants to new preferences for purposes of familiarization (habituation) to a stimulus in a three-phase experiment. They found that following two familiarization procedures, new preferences were strong for the infant’s event with complex stimuli such as colored photographs. In examining the effects of stimul exposure, Rowe & Craske (1998) examined habituation with 1 specific stimulus exposure vs. multiple version of the stimulus (spiders).
