While working the front desk at your medical office, a patient came in and started asking you several questions regarding the privacy of his records in accordance to The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

What rights do I have regarding my medical information?

How do you correct or amend the patient record?

Can I request restrictions on use?

Who owns the medical records?

I heard someone mention JCAHO on the way out, does that have to do with my medical records? If not what is it?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted in 1996 to address the disclosure of the individual’s health information. At this time, the law extends to any type of protected health care information whether electronic, written, or oral.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (n.d.), regarding medical information, the person has the right to:
