(1) What are some fundamental differences between inpatient and outpatient treatment?

The differences between outpatient and inpatient care include:

(a) inpatient care is provided in a hospital setting, clinic or care facility vs. outpatient in which patients commute to a hospital or health care facility;

(b) inpatient hospital care can be costly vs. outpatient where costs can be more controlled;

(c) there can be more frequent evaluations in an inpatient facility versus outpatient where evaluations is dependent upon patient’s availability; and

(d) inpatient is more accessible than outpatient, particularly among disabled and older person. As an example, a study was introduced in Germany where psychotherapy was carried out on bipolar psychotherapy in places located close to the patient’s home. The concerns were focused on the patients’ back to work initiatives and daily social life.
