Learning to learn. Harry Harlow showed us that monkeys can become very smart at learning a general strategy that helps to solve new problems. He presented his monkeys with a series of two-object problems using “junk items” from a “dime store” (small toys and novelty items). Each problem involved presenting a pair of objects, with one of them designated as correct (S+) and one as incorrect (S-). A specific pair was presented for a series of trials until the problem was solved. There was no way to tell which was the S+ except by trying on the first trial that pair was presented.
