Based on the person-centered approach, self-concept is an important aspect of the individual’s personality and propensity for growth. Roger (1980) explained self-concept as referring to beliefs regarding one’s nature, unique qualities and behavior. However, criticism is waged at researchers for using the terms self-concept and self-esteem interchangeably. Findlay & Bowker (2009) suggests that there is a distinction between the two terms in explaining that self-esteem is a judgment that indicates psychological well being; whereas (in their view) self-concept provides a description of the person. However, from the perspective of Rogerian person-centered therapy, self-esteem is more than just a description of the person; it refers to the person’s emotional and cognitive well being that is based upon the person’s self-acceptance (i.e., a healthy concept of the self). For example, as Roger describes the healthy concept, the person with a positive self-concept possesses feelings of self-worth, confidence and self-reliance.
