The media con stantly remind us that women have become doctors, lawyers, merchants, chiefs; implying that no one is left to tend to the children. The truth, as always, is far more complicated. Mothers have not aban doned home and hearth to go to “work.” Mothers are working harder than ever, but their principal place of business is still the home. For all of the ink spilled about the high-tech economy, the majority of American mothers are still primarily engaged in the oldest economy in the world: the household. Most people seriously underestimate how much of their lives contem porary American women spend on their children. There is even evidence that today’s mothers are taking the tasks of reproduction more seriously than any previous generation.
